Alisa Cohen-Stein is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in private practice in the Chicago area. She has been in private practice since 1995. She has presented at numerous conferences on the topics of mental health treatment, vicarious trauma and surviving abuse. She is the former director of the in-patient State-Wide Program serving Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Persons for the Illinois Department of Mental Health. She also served as Clinical Consultant to the Thresholds Deaf Program, serving persons who are Deaf and mentally-ill. Currently, Ms. Cohen-Stein works extensively with persons dealing with anxiety and depression, life transitions and relationships.
We in the mental health field understand that, often, people come to us in crisis, or when feeling hopelessly anxious or depressed. As a seasoned clinician, Ms. Cohen-Stein can help you with managing symptoms and reducing the distress they cause. Please consider, though, that psychotherapy is not just about reducing or managing symptoms. The healing that occurs is through the relationship with a caring professional who can help you understand why you have made the choices you have made in the past, and to decide how you want to proceed in the future. The past may inform the present, but it does not have to predict the future.
